I bring my american BF watching it and he understood most of the story. Acutally I am confused by some of the story. Especially the first time they make love. Mr yi like Ms. wang so much however he treated her bad... my BF said he tried to test her. But by reading your article I totally understand the whole movie.

I never like Zhang ai ling's story. Her stories are too dark. Mr. wang to me is not smart she gives her body for no reason - not for true love not for her believe. However in the war time, no body can control his/her life. Especially a woman!
