Negative impact of voluntourism (not necessarily volunteerism)

I am neutral in volunteering in other countries simply because I cannot afford it nor have the right connections.

The true spirit of volunteering is to help those in need, not for the purpose of fulfilling a requirement of college admission or job advancement, or badge of honor, or a glamorous profile picture.
