what is psat and who should take it

I was suggested to letting my kids ( 6th grader and 5th grader) to take a PSAT test. Trying to find out what is it and what is the score for it. I am totally lost. Is there any kid took the test before? And what is a OK score for this age kid? All I know about these tests, there are act, sat test to take to go to college. Never heard of Psat before.
