请教关于养狗的推荐

家里的小朋友想要养狗，俺简单看了一下。狗狗的品种真是很多。有点“迷茫”中。。。
俺的想法是，养个中等大小的。不想很大的那种，但也不想太小的。
俺家的后院不算太大，也还够狗狗小跑一下下。家里两个小朋友，4岁和6岁。
请问各位达人，可有推荐？？
