I expressed my minority opinion somewhere else on this movie, I think it is a controversial movie, simply because Ang Lee used unnecessarily kinky, sometimes pornographical settings to stimulate or stir unhealthy sexual arousal, to achieve its commercial goal.

As examples, the first love scene is completely unreliable, unexplained: in that kind of setting, love making among same sex is not more acceptable than kinky animal/human sex act; another is the one you observed in your 2nd last sentence, namely Ennis having sex with his wife in a pose obviously resembling gay sex, I can not agree with you that this is a master piece, not even a tasteful art form, it is plain degradation of heterosexuality. Just think of the feelings of his wife as a woman, what cruel is it when we take one's hurt as triumphant of the other?
