Well, the war between Japan and U.S. was mainly on the sea and it was natural that less soldiers died. But the threaten japan has imposed on U.S. was in fact a lot bigger than Germany and Italy. Imagine what could happen if U.S. lost in the Midway battle. The war between Japan and U.S. at that time was really a war of survival and death. However, Germany and Italy never really threatened U.S. and they announced war with U.S. simply because they are allies of Japan. Of course, I won't deny the fact that race also played some roles in their decisions.
