Russian Scholar: 'The Whole World Is Fawning over China. Why Can’t We?' |

Recently a China scholar in Russia publicized his regrets of having lost too many opportunities to collaborate with China in military research and trade, due to the fear that China may steal technology from Russia. "The whole world is fawning over China. Why can't we?" This lament of his has been made headlines in a number of major media in China. [1] According to this Russian scholar, China used to be an important, long-term buyer for Russian's armament. However, since 2004, several attempts in reaching certain bilateral military trade agreements were fruitless, which he considered to be a huge loss for Russia. He enumerated several examples to illustrate his point: China is capable of developing state-of-the-art military technology, regardless of whether Russia is willing to collaborate with China or not. "Today's China is no longer the China we used to know. It is a nation even the U.S. cannot afford to casually offend or even not dare to offend at all. Thus the loss on our part is extremely heavy." He predicted that although the leaders-to-be in the European countries in the next two years would most likely continue to turn a cold shoulder to China, once China is ready to approve civilian enterprises to engage in war-industry production and seek international collaboration, all EU countries will be shocked and take the initiative to lift their arms embargo. Immediately re-establishing a collaborative relationship with China before other countries have a chance to is the core of his proposal. Notes: [1] China News BBS, September 29, 2007 |
