China simply can't afford losing more time to play the catch up game if the Chinese want to stay competitive. Take F-20 as an example. The Chinese can't find an ideal indigenous engine product so the Chinese look elsewhere for an alternative, an temporary solution, before the Chinese next generation engine can be pushed into service. By doing so, China can continue on their research in the field of new generation aircrafts & not missing a beat because of one criticle "crippled" part.
