The re-designed armament on P-2V sounds werid to me

It is equipped with air-to-air missles (I assume) but the missles can't locate the enemy targets/aircrafts from behind.  What is the point to arm the aircraft with weapons that can't defend the airplane itself?   

What do the weapon system designers expect from a reconnaissance aircraft?  Having the pilot to maneuver the aircraft to the rear of enemy jets then launch the deadly missles?  

Do I miss something here?
