Hitting the Roads of Fear in Zaporizhzhia

ALLA AND I JUST LAUNCHED A NEW FUNDRAISING CAMPAIGN TO PURCHASE DRONE DETECTORS

If supported, it may be vital to us

Zaporizhzhia — Several explosions shook the center of Ukraine’s sixth-most populous city yesterday. Yet another nighttime attack by the Russian Federation, which found its worst epicenter in Kyiv, resulting in six deaths and 36 injuries (including two children aged 7 and 9 and a pregnant woman), saw an unsuccessful attempt here in Zaporizhia to disrupt the logistics of the Trident Armed Forces toward an eastern front that is increasingly becoming less distinct from the southern one. Ukrainian anti-aircraft fire neutralized nearly all drones in Zaporizhzhia’s airspace, preventing a massacre like the one a few days ago when similar UAVs killed civilians by hitting a crowded bus stop during rush hour, destroying the parking garage and nearby offices. Early this morning, before this article was written, multiple local emergency teams cleared streets and parks of debris from Russian (i.e., Chinese) drones shot down by Ukrainian anti-aircraft fire, which electronic warfare systems cannot always stop.

Much of that debris ended up on the sandy shoreline along the Dnipro, where a surreal atmosphere prevails: the cries of seagulls and the sound of the surf are almost constantly drowned out by the roar of cannons thundering to and from the deepest part of that river. On both banks, people are fishing, soldiers patrol feverishly scanning the horizon, and children play in the chasms created by the fiery lapilli of drones, which have turned the sand as black as coal. Further south, the nuclear power plant that Chechen and Russian troops have occupied illegally for three years in Enerhodar looms, and even further down lies the reason why the Dnipro has lost its momentum and flow: the Nova Kakhovka dam, blown up by those same terrorists over two years ago.

The capital of Zaporizhia oblast’, which the Russians supposedly annexed in a farcical referendum despite never having set foot there, is now going through one of its most critical phases. Although not a single military vehicle passes through the streets of the center, all the main roads south of the city have become deadly routes where civilians speed by in their cars under kilometers of anti-drone nets. Before those protections were installed, Alla Perdei and I documented the grim safari undertaken by the Russians, who targeted cars and people from the opposite bank with artillery fire, drones, and high-caliber precision weapons. A couple was killed in Bilenke, right where Alla and I captured the first images of the marshy Dnipro Riverbed. Another family was wiped out while fleeing from Stepnohirsk, on the other bank. Other lives were lost in Nikopol’ and Marhanets, where the Russians also tried to hit us with an FPV drone. I reported yesterday from those same streets how dire the situation is in nearby Malokaterynivka.

President Zelensky was in Zaporizhzhia until a few hours ago. After visiting soldiers in Rivnopillia — the hottest point on this front — he held a security meeting with the military command to stabilize the difficult situation that had arisen in that area. He ordered the immediate transfer of additional resources, strengthening of engineering measures in the Stepnohirsk direction, and the evacuation of civilians from designated critical areas. Other topics discussed at the briefing included the anti-aircraft defense of Zaporizhzhia’s roads, logistics, and critical infrastructure, which connected with operations in Pokrovsk. The President of Ukraine then traveled further south, yesterday visiting the command post of the 65th Velykyi Luh Mechanized Brigade, part of the 17th Army Corps, which has successfully defended the Orikhiv slope for years.
Evaluated superficially and carelessly — often by those lacking any real knowledge of the facts — the counteroffensive operations carried out there by the ZSU in 2023 created the most stable point on the entire frontOrikhiv still holds out, resisting every Russian breakthrough attempt.
It was there that I was able to capture images from the exact same positions where I filmed (and where I lived for a long time) nearly three years ago. Looking back at those shots, I now realize the cost of the massive Ukrainian resistance and the apathy of those who failed to support it properly: all those young men Alla and I shared the unforgettable moments evoked in those shots with are no longer with us today.

Through our crowdfunding campaign, we aim to purchase and install drone detection devices on each of our vehicles to protect against drone attacks in hot zones. Anti-drone «РЕБ» devices have proven effective against traditional wireless drones, but are completely ineffective against those connected via fiber-optic cables. We are launching this new campaign to ensure that none of those war machines will hit us when we approach the frontlines where we write our articles. Your support will not only protect us but also the civilians and defenders within the device’s range.
