One After Another, Russian Criminals Fall
By: Giorgio Provinciali
Live from Ukraine
Bucha – Last Saturday, 3,700 kilometers from here, a car exploded in the Russian region of Kemerovo. There was only one person inside, behind the steering wheel. His name was Veniamin Mazherin. A lieutenant colonel in the Russian National Guard, to his fellow citizens. A war criminal, or more simply, an executioner, to those who survived the persecution and torture that the now-former member of the «Obereg» special unit inflicted on the civilian population of Bucha during the Russian occupation. The Ukrainian special services of the ГУР, announced the news, recalling that the Mazherin unit was among those of the Rosgvardia directly involved in war crimes and acts of genocide against the Ukrainian people in the Kyiv region between February and March 2022. The RUPR also specified that by April of that year, all those responsible for the crimes committed by the «Obereg» had been identified and that measures had been taken to ensure that each received just punishment.
This work was made possible mainly through the survivors’ testimonies and the collected video and photographic evidence, which enabled the Prosecutor General of Ukraine to start a criminal investigation for violations of the laws and customs of war.

Alla Perdei and I knew many of those survivors personally. Their stories were among the most poignant and dramatic we have ever reported on these pages. I now returned to Bucha to meet someone who confirmed a crucial detail: digital archives exist containing hundreds of hours of recordings of the horrors committed during those days. Surveillance webcams, closed-circuit television cameras, bodycams, drones, and other recording devices continued recording even during power outages, thanks to auxiliary batteries and backup devices. Thanks to modern data protection techniques, these tapes contain a visual record of much of the Bucha massacre. They expose the genocidal intent of Russian and Chechen troops, who were given free rein to unleash their most primal, base, and inhuman instincts against the defenseless Ukrainian civilians.
Alla Perdei and I already wrote about the existence of that massive digital evidence archive three years ago, when the wildest denial theories about that carnage were dominating Italian television talk shows. Revealing even a single detail could compromise their legal standing, as they constitute undeniable proof of what the civilian world has already partly seen and knows.
The Sunday Times recently revealed the identities of 13 Russian commanders directly involved in the Bucha massacre, that dark chapter in human history that forever changed the perception of the Russian war in Ukraine.
Leading the list is General Colonel Alexander Chaiko, commander of Russia’s Eastern Military District. He is followed by Major General Sergey Chubarikin, commander of the 76th Airborne Division; Artem Gorodilov, Azatbek Omurbekov, and Andriy Kondrov, commanders of the 234th Regiment, the 64th Separate Mechanized Brigade, and the 5th Armored Brigade, respectively; General Colonel Alexander Sanchik; General Colonel Valery Solodchuk; Major General Vadim Pankov; Major General Vladimir Seliverstov; Colonel Yuriy Medvedev; Colonel Aleksey Tolmachat; Colonel Sergey Karasyov; and Lieutenant Colonel Denis Suvorov. Clearly, none of them will escape with a copy of “Crime and Punishment” on their bedside table after a night of revelry.

On Monday, the Kyiv General Prosecutor’s Office announced that 661 Ukrainian children have been killed and 2,203 injured since the beginning of the war during Russian incursions; 4,500 schools have been destroyed, as have 1,294 hospitals. Over 19,000 children have been abducted (the actual number is likely much higher), and at least 23 cases of sexual abuse against minors have been reported.
Many of these atrocities occurred in Bucha, where mass graves, survivors’ accounts, and satellite images exposed to the world a truth so horrifying that it could be said to have forever changed Western public opinion and the course of the war. As the Ukrainian Prosecutor General noted, these are not just numbers – chilling in themselves – but broken dreams, children’s voices silenced forever, homes destroyed, and destinies shattered. It is an attempt to wipe out Ukrainians as a nation through a deliberate policy of terror.

Giorgio Provinciali

Alla Perdei
