Mud On Blood

By: Giorgio Provinciali

Live from Ukraine

Kyiv – Less than 24 hours after the brutal Russian attack on a Kharkiv kindergarten that housed 48 Ukrainian children, I found myself documenting a similar incident on the streets of the Ukrainian capital. On the night between Friday and Saturday, the Russian Armed Forces fired a missile at the busiest kindergarten in the Darnytskyi district, creating a large hole in its outdoor playground.

From the images I captured for this newspaper in pouring rain, it’s clear that it wasn’t a military target at all, but a meeting spot for children from the entire neighborhood. While I was filming, many of them were right there, all around me: they were trying to reassemble swings, toys, tables, and chairs to their size, searching for their remains in the mud. I had just reported on these pages about the moment the Russian air force opened fire on more children kneeling with clasped hands on the streets of Nizhny Novgorod to honor one of their fellow citizens who died defending Ukraine. Yet a new act of that ongoing terror was taking shape.

More missiles of various types struck the capital on Sunday, killing three and wounding over 30, seven of them children. The youngest was just four years old. I filmed that devastation from the playground nestled between the buildings of the most densely populated neighborhood in Desniansky District. Hitting one of those apartment buildings head-on, the Russians showered it with rubble, while other children chased each other around me, counting the missing ones.

«But are these images you film reaching the eyes of the world?» an elderly gentleman asked me, taking my arm to ensure my gaze was fixed on the rubble and imploring me to show the world every detail of that carnage, as if I myself could do something to stop it. Just as in the Obolonskyj district, a little further on, another Russian missile had ripped through the facade of a building packed with civilians, wreaking havoc.

«Unfortunate incidents» – Russian officials scabrously commented. While monitors reported those obscene statements – reported by numerous Italian news agencies that downplayed the incident – images of other massacres of civilians were coming in from across Ukraine. What I predicted in my last dispatch about the new UMPK kits being used by Moscow to extend the range of the old FAB glide bombs has come true, and the Russian Air Force was already bombing Odesa, Kryvyi Rih, and Kamianske with new KAB ‘Grom-1' and ‘Grom-2' glide bombs. As a result, 496 Ukrainian miners ended up trapped underground in Dnipropetrovsk, in the seventh Russian offensive over the past two months against the DTEK coal companies.

Near Sumy, the Russians opened fire on a bus filled with civilians from the community of Bilopillia, including an 8-year-old boy and a 15-year-old girl. Shortly afterward, they shot again at a humanitarian convoy carrying food supplies, seriously wounding the 36-year-old driver and destroying the precious cargo.

The bloodstains on the sandbags at the entrance to the only remaining supermarket in Bilopillia, where Alla Perdei and I recorded the last video for this newspaper with its mayor, speak volumes about how vital those needs were. Still, the Russians struck again to destroy, starve, and exhaust.

About thirty kilometers from the opposing front, a Russian Lancet drone hit the television crew of the German broadcaster “Welt,” injuring one operator in both legs, killing a 48-year-old Ukrainian soldier from the 42nd Brigade who was escorting them, and severing the leg of another. Just a few hours earlier, two other Ukrainian colleagues had died near Kramatorsk.

The consequences of a russian strike against Ukrainian civilians in Kramatorsk described in this article

Three days of relentless attacks on schools, kindergartens, humanitarian convoys, and journalists, but beyond what some news agencies had already reported – often distorted – there is very little mention of all this in the Italian newspapers.

The public information service even reposted the false claim by TASS that 5,000 Ukrainian soldiers were surrounded at the front, even though recent weeks showed the opposite was true. This false report was picked up by other newspapers, with one even doubling that number while praising Russian successes. Amid the bloodshed described and the 20,000 Ukrainian minors kidnapped by Russia, some newspapers chose to focus their front pages on alleged Ukrainian trafficking of low-caliber weapons. Throwing more mud on the blood does not absolve those who refuse to see.

Giorgio Provinciali)
