Russian Fire on Ukrainian Defenseless Civilians

Nizhyn – I find myself writing this article from the basement of an old Soviet-era building because the same criminals who started this war insist on continuing it by bombing the Ukrainian civilian population. A few minutes ago, I was documenting one of the countless funeral processions seen through the streets of Ukraine. I was in the car at the head of a convoy carrying yellow-blue and red-black flags, following the refrigerated truck that was transporting the remains of a hero who died fighting to defend Ukraine to his hometown, when the anti-aircraft sirens began wailing again, warning of an imminent Russian attack.
Hundreds of people were pouring out of shops and restaurants to kneel as the body of their fellow citizen passed by when the Russian air force opened fire on Nizhyn again. Drones and missiles had already swept through the city with unprecedented ferocity in recent days, lashing out violently against its energy infrastructure. Others had destroyed the local Epitsenter shopping mall (the 14th in Ukraine to suffer that fate) and a Nova Poshta postal service office, while one had hit a building directly.
Easy civilian targets for the Russian terrorists, who once again opened fire on the defenseless population of Nizhyn as they gathered on the side of the main road. Perhaps crippled by Ukrainian anti-aircraft fire, a Russian Geran-2 UAV ended its flight without exploding against an array of solar panels in a parking lot. One hit a power pole squarely, another destroyed a repeater’s pylons, and still others aimed at the heart of the local energy infrastructure again. One ended up crashing right into the center of a building, setting fire to several cars below. With the perverse precision of the same raid that surgically targeted the blades of a wind turbine in Kramatorsk on Thursday, the Russians have once again deliberately attacked civilians.
So, while I was filming the last tributes paid by Nizhyn to its hero for a documentary that will be featured on this newspaper’s YouTube channel and website, the digital eyes of many other cameras were probably scrutinizing that gathering from a reconnaissance drone. There were children kneeling with clasped hands, elderly people in tears, and men in wheelchairs holding the Ukrainian flag taut, beating their chests in front of their hero. I filmed everything, because everything must be remembered.
A few hours earlier, a Russian Lancet drone had killed two journalists in Kramstorsk, Olena Gubanova and worker Yevhen Karmazin, and seriously injured another, Oleksandr Kolychev. They too were reporting the truth about Russian crimes, documenting the evacuation of the Ukrainian civilian population from Donbas.
As President Zelensky emphasized, «These are not accidents or mistakes, but a deliberate Russian strategy aimed at stifling all independent voices reporting to the world on the Russian Federation’s war crimes in Ukraine.»
Without the determination, dedication, and spirit of sacrifice of those who risk their lives to ensure that genuine, live information, rather than the nonsense written remotely by Kremlin propagandists, finds its way into the pages of history books, it would not have been known that the day before, the occupiers had opened fire on civilians in Zvanivka, killing a 62-year-old woman, her 30-year-old son, two other young men and their father, and wounding their mother in the jaw after shooting her in the face in the Bakhmut district.
This is Russia’s war in Ukraine, and Alla Perdei and I will continue to tell it on these pages as it is, unsparingly, as we have been doing for 1,339 days.
