Khmelnytskyi – While most media coverage focuses on the flotilla intercepted en route to Gaza by the Israeli navy, a group of Italian volunteers has set out to reach the front lines of a war that is perhaps too quiet in the streets of Italy, providing concrete and truly essential humanitarian aid.
We met them in Khmelnytskyi, a city that has experienced relentless attacks since the start of the full-scale Russian invasion of Ukraine, causing frequent power and water outages in several areas, damaging a dozen skyscrapers and three schools, and injuring multiple civilians and killing one rescuer.
Following Antonino Alfio Moschetto, an Italian businessman in Ukraine who was later forced to flee the bombings, we met Dr. Marco Sarboraria, an anesthesiologist who had traveled from Aosta with Silvio Gasparella and Roberto Sangiorgio; Carlo Ferrari from Florence (whom we had already met during previous operations supporting the Ukrainian resistance); Gianpiero Cavarero from Cuneo; and little Dante, Moschetto’s four-year-old son and the group’s mascot. They drove a support vehicle and five ambulances purchased thanks to the generous contributions of organizations such as the Aosta Valley Community Foundation, the Chornobyl Children’s Rights Forum, Roberto Benelli, and the Lunigiana Pontremoli Rotary Club, as well as the Ukrainian parish communities in Italy coordinated by Father Yuriy Ivanyuta. The reason is simple: as Moschetto – who, in addition to living in this city for a long time, has led more than 60 similar humanitarian missions – knows well, Khmelnytskyi has been severely impacted by the Russians, especially its hospital infrastructure. The broader emergency facing the Ukrainian healthcare system is such that it requires diverting many medical vehicles and equipment to areas closer to the fighting. With him and Chaplain Vitaly Futorskyi, who coordinates similar humanitarian missions, we visited the local hospital, damaged by a violent Russian attack that has devastated several other private and residential buildings this year, killing three civilians.
As we reported on these pages, a few months earlier, a swarm of Russian drones had targeted the area of the local nuclear power plant, marking one of the most critically important moments of the war on the night between October 25 and 26, 2024: clear proof that Putin considers even those highly sensitive civilian infrastructures as strategic targets for blackmailing West.
Due to that attack which severely damaged local power lines, 1,860 households in the Slavuta and Netishyn districts of this region were completely disconnected. Eleven apartment buildings, nine private homes, two schools, an administrative building, a shop, a fuel depot, and several cars were destroyed.
Pausing with the Italian volunteers in front of one of those ruins to take some photographs, we noticed that the already valuable convoy of ambulances they were about to deliver contained an equally precious cargo: medical devices including a complete ultrasound scanner, medications, clothing, food, and 150 shoulder and knee prostheses with corresponding operating kits for use in delicate surgeries to restore function and dignity to those who suffered the most serious consequences of those bombings.
The presence of courageous Italians like those we met today in Khmelnytskyi demonstrates how important it is to stay focused on initiatives like theirs because only by listening to and working with those who truly experience war can we make sure that the necessary aid gets to the right place at the right time.
