The dam on the historic Tigris river, needs to be repaired and Italian company Trevi negotiates with the Iraqi government for an 18-month contract for fixing it.

The Italian government will send 450 troops to defend Iraq’s strategic Mosul dam, near the city occupied by the Daesh terrorist group.

On Wednesday, Italian Prime Minister Matteo Renzi defended his government’s decision saying that military protection is needed for the successful rebuilding of the dam. “On the military level we’re doing the things that are really useful, and rebuilding the Mosul dam is key – and we can do it because we’re among the best in the world,” the Italian PM told RTL radio.

The dam on the Tigris river was built by a German-Italian consortium in the 1980s under late Iraqi dictator Saddam Hussein and it is ranked the fourth largest in the Middle East. It is a vital water and power source for Mosul, Iraq’s largest northern city and Baghdad, the capital of the war-torn country.

Even though Mosul is occupied by Daesh, Kurdish forces, backed by US air strikes, retook the dam from the fundamentalists in August 2014.

Italian public news agency ANSA reported that Renzi explained that the dam “is seriously damaged and if it collapses Baghdad would be destroyed.” According to Renzi, American military will also be deployed to protect the dam. ANSA reported that if the dam is destroyed by fighting it could unleash major flooding in Mosul and Baghdad.

Italian construction and energy group Trevi has secured an 1.83 billion contract to shore up the dam, but the firm needs military support to proceed into rebuilding the dam as the life of the workers needs to be protected.

On Wednesday, Italian Defense Minister Roberta Pinotti said that the Italian troops will not go to Mosul in a combat capacity. “We are not going to fight, but to intervene to preserve a dam – a piece of infrastructure that is essential to the future of Iraq and one that if abandoned, runs the risk of causing an environmental disaster,” she told RAI’s Agora talk show and added. “Our troops are going to protect the work of the Italian company that will carry out the intervention on the dam.”
