《自然》上有篇文章报告，美国教授的父母中至少一个有PhD学位的概率，要高出全社会25.3倍。而且这个统计现象近50年是稳定的。

其中历史学和计算机科学教授中父母中至少有一个是博士的比率最高，分别为26.7%和26%。

有意思的是，美国获得博士学位的人中有25.2%的父母只有高中学历。这个数字说明，美国的社会向上流动性要优于中国。

鉴于大学教授群体对一个国家的创新能力和政策制定的重要性，这篇论文 Socioeconomic roots of academic faculty指出

“Analyses of the socioeconomic backgrounds of faculty will both improve our understanding of the social reproduction of the highest levels of academic attainment and scientific influence, and provide a quantitative basis for studies of how representational diversity influences which and what kind of discoveries are made.”

中国人津津乐道的书香世家现象，事关最高级别学术和科学实力的社会繁衍（social reproduction），是一个应该重视的问题。
