Hung Cheng has been Professor of Applied Mathematics in the theoretical physics group since 1970. He received the B.Sc and the Ph.D. degrees from Caltech in 1959 and 61. He had postdoctorate research appointments at Caltech, Princeton and Harvard before joining the MIT faculty in applied mathematics in 1965. In 1978, Professor Cheng was elected Academician of Academia Sinica. In 2017, Professor Cheng received the Distinguished Achievement Award in Technology and Humanity/Humanities from the Chinese Institute of Engineers, San Francisco Bay Chapter.
In 2016 Professor Cheng published his first novel, "Nanjing Never Cries" (MIT Press, 2016). On September 26, 2016, Cheng gave a reading and talk about his novel, at an event hosted by the School of Science, with the MIT Chinese Students and Scholars Association, and the Chinese Writers' Association in Northern America, New England Chapter.

在《南京不哭》的小説序言中，鄭洪先生清楚説明了，他寫這本小説的緣起。在一次麻省理工學院内的會議，讓他下了決心要寫這本小説。
那天的會議，談論的是美國在廣島投原子彈事件。會議的主講人，是三位美國人，一位日本人，沒有中國人，也沒有東南亞人。鄭洪先生感受到，整個會議以及會議後的評論，都漠視了廣大的受害人民的存在。在書的序言中，鄭洪先生是這樣敘述他的想法：
“身爲一個物理學家，我明白原子彈的殺傷力，也為死傷的日本平民哀悼。但歷史不容以私念剪裁，我們有權對世界發聲，把過去中國人身受的苦難説個清楚，提升世界對列强蹂躪中國的認知，喚醒裝睡者的良知。像我這樣年紀的老人們，身歷八年抗戰的煎熬，有責任把這個歷史的教訓傳下來，留給我們世世代代，千千萬萬的子孫。” http://blog.wenxuecity.com/myblog/74241/201809/37339.html
