Per-algebra is not hard at all for most Chinese parents, and she must pass this before she can take more advance classes later. It seems she is in advanced class,and you should encourage her, praise her while you work together with her.

By the way, I don't think she is doing so poorly. By the end of this semester you might see a big improvement. This is because they are right at the process from an actual number to a variable "x".
