You may have satisfied the two year requirement of physical living together but not the legal custody aspect of the requirement. The requirement is you must have legal custody and living together for 2 years with your adopted son. Legal custody normally occurs after the legal adoption.
Your case is not totally hopeless. If you can prove by clear and convincing evidence that your adopted son was abandoned by his natural parents, you file I-600 (Orphan petition) after you become a US citizen. I-600 petition must be filed before his 16th birthday. Good luck!
