breaching contract

You are going to breach a contract and should pay said penalty. There is an infinite number of contract varieties. What scoopydoo said was just one common case for big US companies. Your contract sounds like a business contract, instead of an employment contract. Did you sign the contract as an employee, consultant, or business?
You'd better ask advice from a lawyer.
