theft law issues help!!!!

我的一个朋友最近去商店买东西的时候，有一样东西放在在另一个商店买的袋子里出来的时候忘记check out了，结果被发现了，要送count, 好像police也要参与，东西不值钱30-40加元，不知道这种情况会有什么样的惩罚，后果会怎样？我们现在都很着急，刚来加拿大不到一年，有没有大虾指点一下呀？ 谢谢！！！！！！
