Travel parole and work permit

are processed separately from green card, don't require fingerprints, and should arrive in your mailbox much sooner than green card.

After you get the work permit, you will then have the legal authorization to work, so it's safe to stop H-1. But the (temporary) work permit is valid for only one year. You will then need to renew it next year.
