请教老猫和各位 about a hit and run case

I need somebody’s help here.

My car was stopped at the red light at the intersection. A black vehicle failed to stop and run into my car in the back. The right side in the back of my car had a serious damage. The driver of the black vehicle is a young women who had strong Spanish accent. She told me she was very sorry to hit my car. We decide to pull over our vehicles to discuss how to deal the accident.
She brought her insurance card. The insurance was covered by Farmers insurance. She told me she will call her insurance company ASAP. She wrote down a name. She left her cell phone number. I left my cell phone number to her. She told me she will call me immediately. I was on the way to home. I had to catch a flight. I felt her attitude was quite sincere at that time. I trusted her. I didn’t get her insurance policy number at that time.

We left after a few minute’s talk.

When I arrived my home, I called the phone number left by the woman. No-body picked up. I called Farmers insurance. However, the representative of Farmers can not file a claim because of lacking information. I tried to call her again and again. I only heard music after the phone ring several times. Finally, the woman called me back. She told me she didn’t want file a claim to insurance since the insurance rate will go-up. We can go a mechanic shop to fix it. She will pay all the cost of the repair. I told me I can accept her proposal. I also told her I will be on out-of town for a week and we can settle it when I am back. I want her driver license number. But She told me she will call me later ASAP to give me driver license number.

I then fly out-of-town

I called her several times after I backed. However, nobody picked up. I call her using another cell phone. She did return a call. But when I start to speak, she hung off immediately. I don’t believe her honest any more. I have to ask police’s involvement

I reported this to the police station. The police considered the case as hit and run. It will take at least one week to investigate. The police can not confirm if the investigation will have an outcome.

My question is:

If the police fail to catch the hitter, what can I do next? Will it be helpful to find an attorney to handle it?
