在美国超市顺手拿商品放入自己口袋被抓，后果将会怎样？

我一个朋友去超市，看见一个很喜欢的东西，他就顺手放进自己的口袋。出门时被人发现被抓。请问那位朋友懂法律。说一说他后果将会怎样。谢谢！
