靠"政治避难"取得绿卡后能否回国探亲?

昨天一朋友的孩子很高兴的告诉我,她的绿卡快下来了,她很想回国探亲. 我知道他父亲是通过律师办的政治避难移民,细节我也不便多问.孩子随父已来美国数年,母亲尚在国内.他们的中国护照已过期,她父亲问过律师在拿到绿卡后是否能回国探亲,回答是最好短期内不要去.她父亲走这条路也是希望能够给孩子更好的教育机会. 她学习很好,刚从本科毕业并被录为研究生.孩子思母心切,来向我咨询有无可能. 本人虽来美国多年,却无此经验. 我想第一步是更新护照,可是万一旧护照交到领馆后被没收怎么办,因为尽管那护照过期,可仍然是她唯一的证件.要被没收可就更麻烦了.办政治避难美国是否通知中国? 那律师说最好短期内不回的道理如何? 还是随口说的? 望有经验者不吝赐教,代孩子谢您了.
