1. If there were other airlines flying to NY, why didn't you just hop on?
2. Yes, probably they could have helped you to catch your flight to Osaka as a courtesy, but it was not within their obligation to do so.

You are just out of luck. Anyway, you should still have the credit with that Japanese airline to use at least for another year.
