Whether it is an opt application or h1b petition, as long as you got the receipt from uscis demonstrating that your case has been filed and is waiting for adjudication, you may stay in the US till their determination of your case (approve or deny), even if you would be out of status. With 2005 h1b approval, you may stay lawfully but cannot work till this coming October 1st, the starting date of fiscal year of 2005.
