self-employment 收入（照看孩子）可以报expenses吗

老婆给别人照看孩子，收入8000美元，可是孩子他家是用自己家公司的支票支付的，报税的时候又给了一个1099-MISC表，这个表的第七项（Nonemployee compensation）列出了支付照看孩子的收入，什么税都没有扣。查了一下，说是这种情况应按self-employment报税。可是按self-employment报税是不是可以申报这个工作的开销的，比如老婆是自己开车去做这个事的，我按一年开了1000 Miles算，用税收软件算光是开车的费用就是6000多美元，这样一折合，只剩下2000美元来计算税了。请问：
1.这种情况允许申报开销吗，如自己开车的花费？
2.如果允许，只有8000美元的收入，报了6000美元的用车开销是不是太离谱了？
