rental car company charged my credit card without permission

I rented a car last year from end of oct to beginning of nov. I got a call from rental car company two weeks ago and told me there was one day I did not pay. when he called, I was busy with my work and I can not remember how many days we rented. So I told him to send me a letter about all the details. I did not get the letter yet, and I found my credit car was charged on the day I was called. I was so pissed off, I did not authorize any one to do that. and I checked my record at home, I think I payed all the days.
so my question is : can they charge my credit card without my permission? I called the rental car company, but did not find the guy who called me. I was told that person will call me back. but it's been three days. no one called me. what can I do? any suggestion will be appreciated.
