Because the jury will most likely identify with the Becker(sp?) family and sympathize with them. Jury trials are quite arbitrary. The potential jurors will probably have very different cultural background from He's and will understand better the Beckers' perspective rather than the Hes'. I guess He's lawyer did not want to take a chance with the jury, which I think is the right call.
