I do not know what is in your contract

I do not know what is in your contract in addition to what you described, especially the termination clause. Did you terminate the contract or did you fire your previous lawyer (with written proof)?

If not, I suggest that you settle this with your previous lawyer by just paying him/her 1/3 of the price. You argument should be that he/she does not even deserve the 1/3 payment as he/she did not finisht the first stage of work.
