medical bill collection

Hello everyone,
After my child hospitalized for a couple of days, the hosptial send us a $300 bill balance. My insurence company blue cross blue shield told me that I am not resposible for the extra change since the hospital is in its network. the bill was sent to a collection company first. today I received a letter from a lawyer. it says that the $300 was refered to the lawyer. abd he is collecting the money. What should I do? I am scared of lawyer. What is the consequence if I do not pay. Any comments would be greatly appreciated.
