How to find the right lawyer

Your post is the most informative in all responses. Thank you so much! Actually finally my friend went to her school legal service for advice since none of us has any idea of the legal processes in this country. However, the school lawyer said that there is no need to find a lawyer; she should just wait till the court date. If the judge offers a class/community service, that's best, if not, then she'd better plead not guilty and wait for a pretrial to speak to a prosecutor. He said a lawyer can't do anything at this stage. Is that right?
