怎么和18岁上大学的儿子在车祸责任上分开

我在加州。儿子今年就要上大学了，上大学的生活费用是我们支助。他可能会买车。问题是：如果他出了大的车祸，保险不够时，对方会追到我们，因为我们在支助儿子上大学。有没有什么方法，能够让我们和儿子在车祸责任上分开？谢谢。
