That is a lot!

I don't know about your area. In my area, if you can cut down quite a few big trees (e.g., 15?), there are places who are willing to do it for less fee (and they took the tree).
I am a lazy and not brave person. I won't risk the potential that my house could be hit by a tree -- even the financial damage can be fully compensated. So I probably will cut the tree and ask the neighbor to split the cost.

Another idea, could be bad -- admit your neighbor's boundary as he proposed. Cut the dead tree. Do some landscaping on it and take care of the land as yours. In 10 years, unless your neighbor argue about it, you can claim the land yours officially (in my state, at least.)
