a check paid to me is stopped

I sold my used TV to a person through a Classified Ads. When the TV was picked up by the person, I demonstrated and there is no problem and actually the TV worked perfectly when I used it. But a couple of days later, the person claimed that the TV does not worked properly and stopped the check. My bank told me that if that check is stopped, I will be charged for it. It seems that it is not easy to get this settled down. what should I do, can I just file a lawsuit against that person?
