When and how can I apply forGC

I am going to get married with an American after knowing her for five years.I am wondering when I can apply for the greencard ? My visa ( F-1) is going to expire and I haven't found a job yet,can anybody tell me how I can keep my status legal? Can I apply for greencard right after we get married or do I have to wait for some time ? Can I go back to visit China after I apply ? As I have never gone back ever since I came here 6 years ago.How long will it take to get the GC ?I have no knowledge about this at all, please help me if you can,I really appreciate it.
