moving vs. renting

I got a job offer in another city and the new company asked me to commence on April 3, 2006. I have been living in the apartment building for one and a half years. After the one year lease, currently I am renting the apartment month-by-month. According to the renting policy, I have to give one month in advance notice if I plan to move out. I gave the superintendent my notice on March 8 and requested to move out by the end of March. However, they said I violated the policy and asked me to pay a full-month rent in April. I negotiated with them and told them I would like to pay them half a month rent for April. They said no.
Is there anyway I can avoid paying them the money?
