J-1 research scholar 交税吗？

我是J-1 research scholar ，三年。来之前听他们说不用交税。但来后学校把所能扣的税都扣了。问他们，还被他们嘲笑了。问问高手们，J-1 research scholar 交税吗？谢谢！！！
