I got married last June in New Jersey. We went to the city hall in the city we reside for the marriage certificate and a simple ceremony. You need to apply for the marriage license from the city first. The best thing to do is find out the phone number of the city hall. Then ask them what do you need to bring. I don't think they need any proof for your single status. But, they will require 1 or 2 witnesses that know both of you for at least a couple of years. Good luck and happy marriage.
