want a divorce

I have green card. and right now studying in a state university for my BA, no any kind of income. no drinking or drugs problems either.he is an us citizen.
I want to divorce him. and also want the whole custody of my son, who is 20 month old.
he has been controlling me financially.(i just learned it was also called domestic violence ).my question is: is the judge going to favor him regarding the custody of the child because he is a citizen and i am only a resident. is it a good idea to sue him for domestic violence in order to get the custody of my son? one more thing is that we have been married for more than 4 years, but i just got the GC last year (and right now i just starting applying for citizenship if possible). how is that going to affect my applying for citizenship.
i had talked about separation with him. but he wouldn't leave.(we are living in a family housing of university in my name and he has an apartment in another city which he owns). what is the difference between separation and divorce except a piece of paper. should i separate him first or divorce him immidiately.
this marriage has torn me up phisically, mentally and emotionally. to divorce is the only way out. but i can not lose my son, who is my only life.i have no family or close friends to talk with in this country. hopefully people as kind as you guys can give some advices or any advice.
