I had similar experience. I asked the immigration officer the same question. And he said it's ok as long as parents leave before the planned extension date(if they planned to extend for 6 months, they can stay here for anther 6 months).

And believe it or not, my parents got the visa again after they satyed in China for another two years. Now they even got the green cards.
