Help: Car insurance

I had an accident last year in OH and then moved to CA. Recently I switched my insurance company and they asked me if I had any accident before. I told them the stroy. My question is, if I did not tell them, would they find it out? Seems to me that they had no idea here in CA as my insurance started about two months ago.
