Because you've already said that you noticed the leak but consciouly disregarded and failed to notice the buyer. In a sense you created the risk.

I barely remember the Hemingway house case that the seller knew Hemingway lived in the house for a year and tried to promote the house as a tourist spot for the city. When he sold the house he did not tell the buyer and the buyer noticed that somebody photographed the house on the front lawn and sued the seller for liability. Another example is that if somebody got murder in a house the the seller did not disclose to the buyer he could be held liable.

I would encourage you to settle with the guy. In your defense, the buyer could be negligent by putting something in the trunk that he should take greater care.

Either way it is a civil case and it should not affect you in any way except economically.
