Depending on the case,it can be one day or a few months.
It's your duty as a citizen, so normally you should not refuse.
But if you give extreme answers to lawyers'jury screening questions you will not be chosen by the lawyers of either side. For example, you can say you think all criminals should be punished without any mercy or you are categorily against capital punishment. Also if you are too smart, or have too much knowledge about the legal system, they don't want you. They like straight minds without prejudgements.
