it's indeed assault, the only chance you got is insist you have no idea they are police officers, hitting police is much more serious than hitting an ordinary person, but this is serious trouble, you need to talk to a good lawyer, at least first pay bond to get your bu*****and out of prison (if he is still in there?)...

never touch police! they could play dirty as you know not all of them are descent...
