If you were not (and won't be) put on the payroll of that company, you can still be F2 even the H-1 was approved. Before your spouse's H-1B get approved, you can file a fresh H-1B as F2. But after that and you yet to find a company sponsoring you, you have to file H-4 to keep status.
Just my 2 cents. You better check with a good lawyer.
