I think you returned the key/card at the end of September. This is equal to that you still occupy the apartment until the end of september. Then you need to at least pay the rent until the day you returned the key.
I am just wondering that this is a commen sense, how could you not to see this? Even in China, you still need to be a good citizen, pay bill, obey the rules...
If you escape this time, next time other Chinese will have trouble to be treated fairly because of other Chinese.
