in my case (I am on J-1 and I am exempted from federal tax), should I pay state tax if I live in VA?
I am thinking of moving to VA from MD. I work for NIH and live in MD. I pay state tax (>$300) right now. Different people told me different results. I am confusded. I find this webpage (http://www.gmu.edu/student/oips/taxinformation.html) saying:
"GMU’s international visitors generally live in either Virginia, Maryland, or the District of Columbia (D.C.). Each of these three has an income tax, but here is something for people from treaty countries to consider: Maryland does not honor federal income tax treaties, but Virginia and D.C. do. If you live in Maryland and are able to protect some or all of your wage or scholarship income from federal tax under the terms of a tax treaty, you will probably still have to pay tax on it to the State of Maryland. OIPS suggests that its international visitors take this into consideration when they make their decision about where to reside during their visit."
But somebody told me I should pay state tax.
I am on my third calendar year (2003, 2004, 2005).
Thanks so much.
各位大侠,谁能肯定的告诉我(state tax)
