Not every lender is that bad. I once borrowed $10,000 from my friend,
then he and I moved almost at the same time, and I do not know where
he moved. Finally I dig out his home address back in Guangdong, China,
in a long while and mailed the money back to his home address. He called
me and laughed, said he never worried about it (he is a rich guy).

Hpefully your friend will return the money to you one day. It's worse
losing hope than losing the money itself.
